And, until I fall apart, defending is what I'll do!
Ella Cooney was a young girl living in Kanto. For several years, she'd lived a happy life with her mom and dad. Her dad was constantly in and out of work, causing the family to rollercoaster all up and down the monetary scale. Eventually, her mom got fed up with it. One day they found her gone. After that, the Cooneys finally dropped below the level where they could really get anything worth calling a healthy diet. Ella mostly lived off of vending machine food she could get for a couple coins. Still, she was pretty happy. She was in a private school on literary scholarship and had a bright future as an author ahead. Until her father started frittering away what money they had on alcohol.
At that point, Ella got fed up with him, too. She stayed for a while, trying to at least set up a plan for him so he wouldn't drink his life away. Then, she left. She was young, headstrong, and quite naive. She decided she could make it on her own. She had a future as an author, it would all work out. She'd sleep in the park until she got enough money to buy her own place. She didn't mind, it would be a coming-of-age experience after all. She loved those kinds of stories best. So she packed up her books and pajamas, quit school, and walked out the door while her father was asleep.
It wasn't long before her original plan was out of reach. She quickly adapted to being a street kid, but just as quickly realized it had been a mistake to quit school. No one listens to you until you have a certain level of education. Within a month, the park was home. She taught herself to pickpocket, though she only did so when necessary. She found several other street kids, but never really joined a gang of them because her education kept her apart from them. She was on the streets for two, maybe three years. It always felt like longer.
Then she was taken from the park as she slept. When she woke up, she was pinned to a table, in a lab room, surrounded by doctors and strange machines. She didn't know what they were doing to her and didn't get the chance to ask. They quickly knocked her out again. The next time she woke up, she was wearing a strange uniform. There was some sort of large robot attacking her, and she was expected to fight it. To her surprise, she was able to. She was stronger. She could take what would be devastating hits without flinching.
In truth, Ella had become a cyborg. Her skeleton had been modified with a special alloy, giving her incredible defenses and immense strength. She was named Prototype BLUE, and, along with prototypes RED and GREEN, underwent many tests. Of course, she didn't like it. She hated that her future had been stolen from her. She hated that her body had been modified without her knowledge or consent. She hated that the very enhancements she had been given to make her stronger weren't stable. They're falling apart, breaking. She can feel it. Ella keeps this secret from the boys, but she knows she's breaking. Even after they were shut down for a long time and enhanced with better technology, it didn't fix the problem. Still, she plays the big sister of the group, and helps plan their escape. On her own, she plans to serve as a distraction while the other prototypes escape.
She only wonders if it was worth it to plan an escape she wouldn't take or a life she wouldn't live.
